As our crops grow and thrive in the temporary grow room a system for knowing exactly what is what has become necessary. While James, our horticulturist can identify every single plant by its mature leaves, even he has trouble distinguishing the seedlings without a labeling system. Also, as we start to mix and match trays to cater to people’s orders the need for an inventory system has become apparent. Our marketing man Eric Diamond has come to the rescue with what we jokingly refer to as the “Diamond Decimal” system for categorizing, coding and tracking. The name ‘thai basil’ is lovely for a plant but giving it a code name has become much more practical. The same goes for the plant locations. Each location has also been allocated a code. A white board is essential in the grow room as plants come and go. Growth data is being synthesized in an expanding computerized database that revolves around our coding system. So far it seems to be working well but there may still be some tinkering ahead.
